Phenytoin (diphenylhydantoin, dilantin) has been the chosen anti-convulsive for the treatment of sudden disorders since the late 1930's. Several epidemiological and clinical studies in human beings showed an increase in malformations in descendants of which mothers took phenytoin during gestation, such as cranio-facial development and growth abnormalities, distal phalangeal hypoplasia, and light or moderate mental deficiency. This work had the goal to study the lingual mucosa, under histopathological and morphometric standpoints, in rat fetuses which were given an intraperitonial injection, consisting of a unique dose of phenytoin (70 milligrams/kilogram of their weight). Being that, we included the examined material in paraffin, 6 micrometers thick, and... |

The histological and morphometric differences in some parts of the gastrointestinal tracts of rat, bat and pangolin have been well established. This investigation aims at comparatively elucidating any adaptational changes the ileum of the three mammals must have adopted to meet its dietary requirements and also cope with their morphological differences. The investigation was carried out using ten rats, ten bats and ten pangolins of both sexes. The animals were slightly anaesthetized under chloroform inhalation. The intestines were harvested and the ileum excised and fixed in 10% formol saline. The tissues were processed for light microscopic study. The following stains were employed: Haematoxylin and eosin (H & E), Van Gieson and Verhoeff's... |

Ofloxacin presents an ample spectrum of antimicrobial action, including combating Mycobacterium leprae, and is currently employed as a substitute when the use of rifampicin is impossible. The objective of this work was to study alterations in testicular cell nuclei of suckling rats, whose dams were submitted to oral application of ofloxacin, and respective control groups. The method utilized was morphometry by the karyometric technique. The main structures observed in histological preparations of the testicles were interstitial cells, spermatogonias, and sustentacular cells. 10 Wistar rats were utilized, four treated and five controls, in the period of the first 25 days of life, whose dams received ofloxacin 12 mg/ Kg of body weight / day orally, before... |

Although being used for years in the treatment of tuberculosis, no data are available in the literature on the safety of pyrazinamide during pregnancy. Accordingly, we aimed to make a first approach to this problem by evaluating the effects of this drug administered during the entire pregnancy of albino rats. Fourty female, EPM-1 Wistar albino rats of about 250 g b.w. were used. Upon conception (day zero of pregnancy) the animals were randomly divided in 4 groups of 10 rats each and labeled as follows. Controls (C), animals treated with the drug vehicle (destilled water); experimental groups (E1, E2 and E3), animals treated with 35, 105 or 315 mg/kg b.w. pyrazinamide by gavage (oral route) once daily up to the term (20th day of pregnancy). Drug or vehicle... |

Protein restriction implies the functional involvement of several systems and organs, including the skeletal muscle, because it is a protein reservoir in the body. This study sought to analyze the morphological and morphometric features of the muscle fibers and neuromuscular junctions (NMJs) of the extensor digitorum longus (EDL) muscle in rats at 365 days of age, submitted to maternal protein restriction during the gestation and lactation periods. Wistar rats were divided into two groups: a Control Group - mothers fed a normal-protein diet (17 % protein) during pregnancy and lactation; and a Restricted Group - mothers fed a low-protein diet (6 % protein) during pregnancy and lactation. The pups were kept with the mother throughout the lactation period (21... |

The characteristics of intrinsic muscle fibers in the anterior third of the adult rat tongue were studied employing light microscopy, SEM and high-resolution SEM (HRSEM) methods. For light microscopy, specimens were fixed in Bouin's solution and embedded in paraffin. In order to identify the muscle fibers and bundles of collagen fibers, frontal sections were stained with hematoxylin-eosin, azo-carmin and picro-sirius. The results showed that muscle fibers near the lamina propria are fixed with connective tissue, constituting several groups. The bundles of muscle fibers are arranged in longitudinal, vertical and transversal directions. For SEM, specimens were fixed in modified Karnovsky solution and freeze-fractured in liquid nitrogen revealed the collagen... |
